<h2><b><u>Category: arming garments</U></B></H2> Arming garments were a necessary element of the armour. They provided hit amortization, protection against attrition from the armour and some elements of the armour were attached to them. Sometimes they were the only protection for poorer men-at-arms. Apart from the protective value of the arming garments, they could have representative and identification tasks. Among arming garments we can find: a gambeson, a padded hose, a padded coif, a padded hood, padded gloves, a wappenrock, a cotte d'armes.

A gambeson with vertical seams reaching the waist (below the waist there are horizontal seams), with a collar. It's well fitted to the trunk. In the standard version, it's fastened with overcast stitches (buttons with a surcharge).

A long gambeson modelled on the one from Biblia Maciejowskiego. It's put on over the head and fastened with two buttons on the neck. It is thicker than our other gambesons.

Gambeson with vertical sewings starting from the waist, without the collar. If fits well to the body. Standard version buttoned up with 15 buttons made of fabric. Sleeves with vertical sewings starting from the elbow to the wrist. 2 part cut of the sleeve provides better manoeuvrability during the fight.

Doublet from the XV century, worn under armour. Doublet is thinly quilted to the lining. There is an option to order the doublet with eyelets for fastening chainmail elements (extra charge).








Gambeson of a simple cut (back part made of one piece), it's shape refers to gambesons from 14th & 15th century. The outer layer is made of thick and durable cotton fabric. The gambeson is fully functional and the price is lower because we use cotton. We produce only standard sizes of this type (S, M, L, XL). For now there is only one colour option available: ecru. Standard workmanship includes 4 bindings (leather straps).

Made of leather, used to attach the armour. It has two eyelets with a 50cm strap pulled through. The edge has small holes to sew it on the arming garment.






Type of gambeson commonly used by soldiers around the 2nd half of XV century with typical V-shaped collar sewn into the back part. The shape of the lower edge of the gambeson is depicted on Hans Memling's paintings.








Long, loose gambeson with a slit on the back side. Wide sleeves. Standard version includes 4 bindings (leather straps). Can be used as the only protection or worn outside the armour. This type of gambeson was used during the whole of the 14th century.






Long gambeson, patterned on italian iconography. Fastened with 2 buttons, quilted torso (horizontal zigzags), the lower part engraved and decorated with stripes of fabric in different color.






Cut of this garment is modeled on the pourpoint of Charles de Blois, who died in 1364. A characteristic features of this gambeson are very deep cuts on the sleeves and cut off at the waist. Sleeves are composed of several connected components for greater convenience. It is possible to order the gambeson made of linen or silk printed in the same pattern as the original pourpoint. In standard, it's fastened at the front with material buttons.








The main, distinctive feature of this gambeson is the lack of visible padding. All the gambeson is padded vertically to the lining. A different type of padding can be chosen if desired. In standard, it has 13 material buttons on the body and 5 buttons on each sleeve (buttons can be changed for moulded if desired). The outer layer is linen or woolen and the lining is linen. This model can be well used as a quilted outer garment.








Early medieval thick gambeson. Padded in rhombus. Length to knee, sleeves 3/4. Without a collar. Fastened on the shoulder.






Gambeson used usually by archers or soldiers in the second half of the 15th century. Short sleeve make shooting more convenient. Standard workmanship includes 4 bindings (leather straps).






Quilted hose worn under the chain mail hose. At the top, it has two holes for fastening. It can be with stapes (PMLS0261, PMLR0263) or with full foot(PMLS0262, PMLR0264).






Gambeson worn on the armour. Buttoned, very thin, quilted vertically. Made of wool with linen lining. In standard, it has 15 material buttons (you can choose also moulded buttons). Very commonly shown in the iconography. Used at the fall of the XIV & XV century.

Outer gambeson worn on protective armament. It has 16 material buttons which can be changed for moulded ones if desired. The gambeson is very thin; the bottom part (from waist downwards) is padded horizontally and the upper part is padded archly. The outer layer is linen or woolen and the lining is linen. It is commonly found in iconography and dated on the turn of 14th and 15th century.








This type was used in 13th and in 1st half of 14th century. The price refers to a tunic in standard version (one colour, no applications). Tunic is made of wool with linen lining. For extra charge you can order applications or/and order a tunic in more than one colours.






A jack made of over a dozen layers of fabric (up to 15 on the body and up to 10 on the arms). The internal layers can be linen or of cotton, the outside and lining are linen. In late middle ages it was used as an armour itself without any metal armour elements fastened to it. It is heavier and more rigid and durable than other gambesons in our offer.
